MAGISTRATES' COURTS COMMITTEES

Magistrates' Courts Committees (MCCs) are the managing bodies for each of the courts areas in England and Wales.

Each Committee is a statutory body, responsible and accountable for the governance and direction of an efficient and effective magistrates? courts service in its area, and is comprised of magistrates selected for their expertise.

Each MCC is responsible for strategic planning and overall policy for its area, and receives advice from the Justices? Chief Executive. As an employer, the Committee exercises responsibility for the appointment and, if necessary, the dismissal of staff, and is accountable to the Lord Chancellor for the use of resources and the service it provides.

The efficiency and effectiveness of local MCCs are inspected by HM Magistrates' Courts Service Inspectorate, and Committee policies are subject to scrutiny. Committees can be held in default if maladministration occurs, and members can be subject to removal and change in extreme circumstances.
